Confronting Bias: Reflections on Discrimination and Fetishization in the LGBTQ+ Community Chapter 21
(In this post I will first begin with the regular blog, then move into the research and end with a questionnaire to test your internal or subconscious racism. I ask that you read with a open mind and know it is my intention to bring us all closer together in this world but with that we must face some hard truths)
Confronting Bias: Reflections on Discrimination and Fetishization in the LGBTQ+ Community Gay Community
In a special reflection of pride month & Juneteenth, I, a black gay men who grew up in a predominantly white Michigan community wanted to address an issue that affects the LGBTQ+ community deeply: the challenges surrounding racial inclusivity. In an era of progress and acceptance, it's disheartening to witness discriminatory attitudes still persist within the gay community specifically the divisions between the cis white LGBTQ+ community and the black LGBTQ+ community.
As a person of color, I've experienced firsthand the unsettling prevalence of profiles declaring "No Blacks, No Asians, No Fats, No Fems...Just a preference." Such statements undermine the principles of inclusivity and equality that the LGBTQ+ community strives to uphold. As someone who doesn't fit into the stereotypical mold of the white, blond, and chiseled gay archetype, I have often found myself facing the harsh reality of being seen as a fetish or a passing interest. It is essential to acknowledge and challenge these harmful patterns to foster a more diverse and accepting community. It is crucial to address this issue and shed light on the damaging effects of racism in our pursuit of love and companionship. Let's dive deeper into this issue and discuss why racial preferences based on attraction are wrong and should never be influenced by race.
Embracing Inclusivity:
The essence of the LGBTQ+ community lies in its inclusivity and celebration of diverse identities. However, it is crucial to recognize that there are instances where racial preferences come into play. Attraction is a complex and personal matter, but it is essential to challenge societal biases that perpetuate racial exclusion. We must actively work towards fostering an environment where everyone is accepted based on their character, not the color of their skin.
Examining Acceptance Levels:
Research indicates that a portion of the white LGBTQ+ community actively welcomes and accepts individuals from diverse racial backgrounds. However, it is disconcerting to note that a portion of this community admits to having racial preferences. While these preferences might be rooted in personal attraction, it is vital to address and challenge these biases to create a truly inclusive community.
One troubling observation is the prioritization of white frat boys with specific physical attributes in the gay world. This narrow focus on a particular beauty standard leaves those who don't conform feeling marginalized and inadequate. It is crucial to recognize that attraction is subjective and encompasses a broad spectrum of possibilities. By embracing the diversity within our community and rejecting the objectification of individuals who don't fit societal expectations, we can create an environment that values authenticity and fosters meaningful connections based on shared interests and emotional compatibility.
Confronting Fetishization:
One disturbing aspect of this issue is the fetishization of black individuals by some members of the white cis LGBTQ+ community. Fetishization objectifies individuals and reduces them to mere stereotypes based on their race. This behavior is harmful and undermines the progress made towards inclusivity. We must recognize and confront this issue head-on, ensuring that everyone is respected for their identities rather than reduced to objects of desire.
Was it a trend?:
I think it’s also important to point out a mere few years ago, there arose a transformative moment when members of the white LGBTQ+ community pledged to embrace unity and diversity beyond the confines of Covid-induced isolation. Their intentions appeared noble, vowing to extend warm invitations to people of color, not merely limiting themselves to a token few. Promising inclusivity at gatherings, beach outings, dinners, pool parties, and trips, their words echoed a hopeful refrain. Alas, upon emerging from lockdown, a disheartening revelation struck me. A cursory glance at the majority of their Instagram profiles revealed a swift retreat to familiar territory: homogeneous clusters of white, shirtless men, indistinguishable from one another, their visual narrative bereft of diversity. This disappointing regression exposes the ephemeral nature of their commitment, a transient trend that failed to endure.
Moving Forward:
To foster a more inclusive LGBTQ+ community, we must actively engage in dialogue, education, and awareness surrounding intersectionality. By acknowledging the challenges we face, we can work towards dismantling biases and creating a safe space for everyone. Let us celebrate the beauty of diversity within our community and strive to ensure that every individual, regardless of race or background, feels valued and included.
I’m conclusion racial inclusivity is an ongoing journey for the LGBTQ+ community. While progress has been made, challenges persist. We must continue to educate ourselves, challenge biases, and actively confront instances of fetishization. By actively challenging these harmful beliefs and promoting inclusivity, we can strive for a community that truly embraces the values of diversity, acceptance, and unity. Together, let's work towards a future where every LGBTQ+ individual, regardless of their race, feels valued, included, and respected.
This research report aims to explore the issue of inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community, specifically focusing on the perceived divide between the cis white LGBTQ+ community and the black LGBTQ+ community. It investigates the prevalence of preference based on race and attempts to quantify the acceptance levels within the white LGBTQ+ community towards other races. Additionally, the report delves into the concerning phenomenon of fetishization and its impact on racial inclusivity. The findings highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing these challenges to foster a more inclusive and equitable LGBTQ+ community.
Introduction:
The LGBTQ+ community prides itself on promoting diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that there are challenges to achieving full inclusivity within this community. One such challenge is the perceived lack of acceptance and inclusion from the cis white LGBTQ+ community towards the black LGBTQ+ community. This research aims to shed light on this issue, explore the notion of racial preference, and examine the extent to which the white LGBTQ+ community accepts individuals from other races.
Methods:
To gather data on acceptance levels within the white LGBTQ+ community, a comprehensive survey was conducted among a diverse sample of self-identified white LGBTQ+ individuals in the Midwest (Mostly Michigan, Illinois, Ohio). The survey included questions regarding racial preferences, experiences of inclusivity, and attitudes towards the black LGBTQ+ community. The collected data was analyzed using quantitative methods to derive statistically significant findings.
Findings:
The survey findings revealed a mixed picture in terms of acceptance within the white LGBTQ+ community towards individuals from other races. Approximately 55% of the respondents reported actively welcoming and accepting individuals from diverse racial backgrounds, while around 45% admitted to having preferences that favored individuals of their own race. These preferences were predominantly based on personal attraction rather than a conscious effort to exclude individuals from the black LGBTQ+ community.
However, it is essential to highlight that a small percentage of the white cis LGBTQ+ community engage in fetishization of black individuals. Fetishization reduces individuals to objects of desire based solely on their race, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and undermining genuine inclusivity efforts. It is vital to confront and address this issue to foster a more respectful and equitable LGBTQ+ community.
Discussion:
The existence of racial preferences within the white cis LGBTQ+ community is a complex issue. While attraction is personal and often subconscious, it is crucial to challenge and dismantle societal biases that perpetuate racial exclusion. Creating awareness, promoting dialogue, and encouraging education around intersectionality are vital steps towards building a more inclusive LGBTQ+ community.
It is equally important to address the issue of fetishization, as it objectifies individuals and devalues their identity. This behavior is harmful, disrespectful, and undermines the true spirit of inclusivity and equality that the LGBTQ+ community strives for.
Conclusion:
The research findings indicate that while the majority of the white cis LGBTQ+ community embraces diversity and actively includes individuals from other races, there is still work to be done. It is crucial to continue fostering awareness, education, and dialogue to challenge racial biases, confront fetishization, and create a more inclusive and equitable LGBTQ+ community. By recognizing and addressing these challenges head-on, we can strive towards a community that celebrates all identities and stands united against discrimination in all its forms.
In the pursuit of true equality and inclusivity, it is essential that we examine the intricate dynamics within the LGBTQ+ community. While progress has been made, it is crucial to shine a light on an often unspoken reality: the presence of internal racism that persists within white LGBTQ+ spaces, affecting the experiences of individuals from diverse racial backgrounds.
